Review #1,536: Mia X "Mommie Dearest"

Reviewed on 9.24.2016 (Review #1,536)

Gettin’ myself inta tha mood fa anotha review, here… Mia X Mommie Dearest, released in 1994 on Slaughter House Records & Emoja Records. This was produced by Sweet, Havic, Ice Mike, Tre-8 & J’ Ro ‘J; lookin’ forward! Start Time: 8:18 PM | End Time: 9:13 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> “ iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> “ iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you sound like anything too mainstream for me, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money and hoes (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it!

01. “Head Up”
Gotta hear it! >>> Beat’s that similar “de-de-de-de-dinn-dinn…” or whateva that sound iz… Bounce vibe, here, and you’re doin’ an okay job on tha verse… My Rating: 3.4

02. Mic-Check
>>> Nice lil’ “check” from J’ Ro ‘J, here… My Rating: N/A

03. “Oz, In The Ghetto”
All about “Oz”! I radio-edited this, randomly, and at first, I almost thought it had to do wit an ounce, lol. >>> Beat sounds nice with those sounds in tha background! Tha 1st verse’s nice about “Oz.” Tha hook sounds nice, too, as it quickly came through wit your sing-rappin’… Tha 2nd verse sounds good about this “Oz,” again. Keepin’ it goin’ wit tha 3rd verse, here…; sounds good! “Oz was in the ghetto, all along;” dope, lol! My Rating: 4.3

04. “Progress”
>>> Beat ain’t too bad, here, tho a lil’ plain… Still, it’s undaground, so I fucks wit it… Hearin’ you on tha 1st verse and it sounds nice ta hear… Tha hook sounds a lil’ catchier than tha previous track, even tho you sound a lil’ quieter on this… Tha 2nd verse sounds a lil’ betta, as you got more of a gutta feel to your delivery and lyrics, here… Hearin’ a lil’ yada-yada in between, here, from a random voice… Tha 3rd verse sounds good ta hear, too; nice job… My Rating: 4.2

05. “Black Ice”
>>> Beat kinda gives me tha same vibe as tha previous track with tha plain vibe… Tha 1st verse ain’t too bad from you, here…; nothin’ much ta say… Tha hook sounds kinda catchy with that male voice backin’ you up… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and I’m feelin’ your gutta vibe in your delivery… I also like how you switch it to a singin’ style… Tha 3rd verse sounds nice, too; express what’s on yo mind! My Rating: 3.8

06. “My Buddy”
>>> Anotha decent, plain beat with tha 1st verse soundin’ decent from you… Title’s “My Buddy”, but you’re repeatin’ “kid sister” on tha hook? Still, a decent track… We have a dude rappin’ on tha 2nd verse, here; they’re uncredited… Also, anotha dude comin’ through on tha 2nd verse, here… It sounds decent, here; can’t complain… Hearin’ tha dude rappin’ “My Buddy” on tha hook, here, and yes, it’s related to tha “My Buddy” toy! Hearin’ you on tha 3rd verse this time, Mia, and it sounds good… And, here y’all are, collaboratin’ on tha hook… I think y’all love each other more and more as tha track gets closer to tha end… My Rating: 3.5

07. In Studio
Let’s hear it… >>> Oh, an interlude/skit, here… Yup, “twerkin’” in ’94; too bad tha mainstream ruined it 19 years later! Still, great ta hear whoeva this iz… My Rating: N/A

½time: A decent release, so far…; a 3.8-rated tape, currently…

08. “Pay Back II”
>>> Beat’s a lil’ more upbeat and tha hook sounds more anthemic… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it sounds betta than tha previous tracks on here… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and you got tha aggression comin’, at times; nice… “Because yo ass still shootin’ dog water, nigga;” damn! You rollin’ dem rhymes!! Tha rest of this sounds nice, as it continues… My Rating: 4.0

09. “Bus Stop”
>>> A smooth, nice-soundin’, laidback vibe ta start this off, with tha beat… A seductive Mia, here, comin’ through silky on tha hook, here…; feelin’ it! Funny how you’re all about tha “DJ,” here, with tha “bus stop.” I’m gettin’ “DJ” B-Real withdrawals, lol! Finally, after all that singin’, here you are wit tha rappin’ at almost tha 3:00 mark, comin’ through wit a nice twist. My Rating: 4.2

10. “Mommie Dearest”
Title track, here… >>> A calm track, here, tho a long one… Tha 1st verse ain’t too bad… I’m kinda diggin’ this plain, old-school beat… Hearin’ tha hook and it sounds like it’s remakin’ somethin’… I’ono, I’m kinda feelin’ it, so I’ll let it slide, as you’re “wishin’ on a star” and all that… Tha 2nd verse ain’t too bad, here… Hearin’ tha hook for tha 2nd time and it’s soundin’ even more catchier, with this “mommie” bein’ “a fiend;” dope singin’!! Tha 3rd verse sounds like it’s goin’… Lyrics sound like life’s a struggle; life sucks, sometimes… My Rating: 4.3

11. “Candy”
>>> Decent start with that man in tha beginning… Beat sounds like it’s like a bounce jam; feelin’ tha dude on tha hook… It sounds like he jammin’ and handlin’ it nicely… Tha 1st verse from you, Mia, sounds good, mixed with a jammin’ vibe… Tha 2nd verse sounds nice; diggin’ tha flavors! Oh, my job!! Tomorrow, I took off and got coverage. However, their lineup sucks and my manager’s managing tha Sunday! It gon be a shitshow; I know it!! They gotta value me while I’m there instead of hatin’ on dumb shit!! Multiple voices on this verse, here, comin’ through wit decent shit… My Rating: 3.7

12. “Gumbo” feat. Lokee
Lovin’ tha “gumbo”? We’ll see! >>> Decent, slow start… Again, anotha nicely-collaborated collab on tha hook, here; eerie beat tops it off, too! “Gumbo!” Hearin’ tha 1st verse (J’ Ro ‘J?) and it’s soundin’ good ta flow on this beat… Tha 2nd verse’s soundin’ nice with tha collab, too, as we’re keepin’ it goin’… Anotha nicely-collaborated verse, here, on tha 3rd verse; great job, guys… “Mia flexin’ wit Lokee?” Iz that my dude on tha track? I’ll give him credit, whether I’m wrong or right!! My Rating: 3.9

13. 943 – Penthouse
Let’s hear! >>> Ooh, anotha skit! I can’t wait ta hit up a shop in Louisiana! Imagine how much $1,000’s I’d spend on CDs, clothes & more?! Nice job, here…! My Rating: N/A

14. “Fat Lady”
! ! >>> Fast rappin’ ova an eerie, fast beat… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it’s soundin’ ncie; definitely feelin’ your “gumbo” lyrics and them as adjectives! Tha hook sounds kinda catchy; likin’ this title! Tha 2nd verse’s soundin’ jammin’, too… Lol @ referencin’ “Janet!” Nice eerie beat ending, too! My Rating: 4.2

15. “U Knew”
>>> Finally, we have a lil’ bit of a dark beat start, here! Lovin’ tha eerie sound! Reminded me of Slick Rick with tha “here we go” before tha 1st verse… Hearin’ tha 1st verse from you and it’s soundin’ okay; you nice and calm, here, on tha delivery… Tha 2nd verse ain’t too bad, here… I hear a featured dude rappin’, here… I’ono why I couldn’t find any featured artists listed on this tape… I’ll have to redo my research when tha time comes… Tha 3rd verse sounds a lil’ quiet from you, but at tha same time, I’m diggin’ what you spittin’… I like y’all ending with tha “it’s like this y’all (this y’all)…,” too… My Rating: 4.1

Overall: I thought this tape was nice; can’t complain… Some of tha production was a lil’ plain for tha lineup of producers, but at times, there was that eerie shit that I like. Tha mysterious features got me curious, but I have a feelin’ some of ‘em were tha producers… Either way, great job, Mia! Still grindin’, as we speak!
